WMMN 600
Media and Culture
- This is an introductory course into the Design Thinking mindset and methodology. Students will learn to adopt a human centered approach to identifying root causes of complex problems. The course will cover baseline techniques and tools to conduct user-centered research, ideate, prototype and iterate, focusing on empathy and problem finding. Using these tools, students will understand how to put users first when enhancing/creating new products, services, systems, processes, and experiences.

Interface Design Principles
- The course addresses design patterns, critical issues, and theories of interactive design. Students learn to analyze and inform their design decisions using knowledge about human-computer interaction, user testing, UX/UI, psychology, and graphic design. Students learn to employ industry practices for prototyping, testing and polishing interactive media.

Web and Applications Technology II
- Explores the roles of designers and front-end developers in producing responsive websites. Using up-to-date procedures, programs and practices, students code websites using JavaScript that are “responsive and mobile first”.

Interactive Design I
- This class is focused on developing a web digital product, using user-centered approaches as UX/UI Designers do on the field. Students will learn how to create a web digital product, including research, usability tests, and prototypes (low-fi, hi-fi, Invision) for a website/web-app. Topics to be covered include design thinking, sketches and wireframes, web design system, design concepts for web, and concepts of agile design methodologies (e.g. Design Sprint).

Interactive Design II
- This class is focused on developing a mobile digital product, using user-centered approaches as UX/UI Designers do in the field. Students will learn how to create a mobile digital product, including research, usability tests (Invision, Framer, or Principle), and prototypes (low-fi, hi-fi, using Sketch App) for mobile. Topics to be covered include design thinking, sketches and wireframes, mobile design system, design concepts for iOS and Android, and concepts of agile design methodologies (e.g. Design Sprint).

Thesis Project (capstone)
- Students research, plan, and develop an original media product which showcases their specific skills in web, app and/or multimedia design. The outcome of this class is a body of fully functional professional-level work, developed independently of all other coursework that can be viewed live as a fully functional production.

Web and Applications Technology I
- Introduces key concepts, tools and technologies used professionally to design websites and mobile apps. Students build websites from the ground up and learn how to use a text editor, upload files to a server, and follow standard industry practices for file and site management.

Entertainment and Education Design
- The course analyzes a range of storytelling and immersive experiences including virtual reality and augmented reality in the context of edutainment. Video Game Design is a major component of this course. Students design games and go through the design, playtesting and iteration process for their games. Students design their final edutainment product in their chosen format which can range from graphic novel, to animations, apps and games.

Web Programming I
- This course introduces fundamentals of programming. Students will learn the standard concepts of events, variables, control structures, and functions, in the context of web content development. Practical skills such as debugging methodology and variable usage will be applied in designing dynamic web pages. Students are expected to apply programming skills in imaginative ways to produce functional interactive experiences.

Web Programming I Lab
- The goal of this lab is to build a website using all of the core concepts learned in class. Students will apply their skills to hands-on programming projects in a fully interactive setting where they will be able to seek assistance from each other as well as consulting with an experienced staff member.

Web Programming II
- This course builds on the introductory concepts covered in WMMN 605 progressing to more advanced computer concepts and interactive programming. Students will learn to develop Web applications that use three-tier architecture, session management, object-oriented techniques, and advanced database interactions.

Database Concepts and Design
- Provides students with an understanding of data structures, storage and retrieval. It introduces the basic concepts of relational database design, including elementary SQL. The course also explores HTML5’s key/value local storage, comparing server-side and client-side data management.

Advanced Topics in Web and Applications Technology
- Supports advanced work related to app and web development, including programming technologies that underlie advanced interactive design work. It enables students to competently realize their advanced design concepts and fine tune their programming and database skills through a real-world project.

Advertising in the Digital Age
- Appreciating advertising's rich history, the course explores the latest commercial trends that impact marketing and advertising on the Internet and the array of portable digital information devices through which people connect. Using a variety of applications, students develop concepts, a marketing plan, and appropriate research methods to evaluate the effectiveness and reach of today's digital advertising.

Corporate Design
- Introduces coordinated identity branding within a digital context and the many applications required to reach the multitude of stakeholders in the corporate audience. After analyzing relevant cases, students design original identity systems that are effective in any format or medium as visual expressions of corporate culture and goals.

The Business of Web and Multimedia Design
- Students take the first steps towards establishing their own web and multimedia design businesses by defining their career goals and developing business and marketing plans. They also analyze successful projects, research target clients, and learn to articulate their interests, personal style, and design and technical skills.

Mobile Application Development I
- The course focuses on the application development process for iOS platforms. Students will apply the iterative design process building a product that has been developed from wire-frame through rough minimally functional products through user-testing towards the deployment stage. Students will be exposed to the Xcode Integrated Development Environment and Apple’s Swift programming language.

Mobile Application Development II
- In this course, students will build upon their existing App Development knowledge to craft applications for phones and tablets that are informed by contemporary production practices and design principles.

Advanced Mobile App Development
- This course will cover advanced features and functionality of both iOS and Android Mobile App development. This course will focus on application interfaces for web access and multimedia capabilities, analyze how mobile front end applications utilize and access functionality hosted in a cloud computing environment. Learn how social networking software like Facebook and Twitter; In-App purchases and ads can be used to promote and extend mobile applications.

Principles of 2D Animation
- This course explores contemporary principles, techniques and applications of 2-D animation. After learning concepts and techniques using the latest technology, students produce a final project by writing a short script, developing an original character, and animating their character in a 2D environment of their own design.

3D Animation I
- Students will learn how to use 3D modeling, lighting and texturing tools create 3D environments, props, and models using Autodesk Maya. The curriculum will include Maya tools for UV modeling, painting custom textures, introduction to NURBS, 3D lighting and camera effects, displacement maps, bump maps and projections. Students will also learn the principles of 3D object animation. Upon completion of the course, students will have created an original 3D environment with textures, props and lights that they can showcase in their portfolio.

Type in Motion
- This course will expose students to the use of dynamic typography, FX and motion graphics. Building on the rich history of title design, students will use typography as a tool for telling a text-based story through animated words supplemented by graphics, animation, still images and/or video.

Digital Photography for Designers
- The course offers a practical introduction to the craft of digital photography. It addresses diverse approaches to the photographic image, focusing on how photography can support and enhance the communicative power of web and interactive designs. Significant historical and contemporary photographs are critically examined to stimulate the student's creativity.

Video and Audio Production Studio
- Students learn the aesthetics and technical aspects of good visual and sound design to effectively communicate messages in digital distribution platforms. Hands-on projects help students to develop concepts, to shoot video, and to capture audio effectively, editing both using industry accepted software, and to manage post-production workflow and distribution.

Professional Internship Experience
- The student will work in a professional environment, for a minimum of 480 hours over a period of at least two semesters. Students may secure an internship independently or may work with the GST Department of Career Services. Weekly logs and examples of work are required for the successful completion of the internship, and are reviewed by the Faculty Internship Coordinator, upon completion of the internship. The purpose of the internship is to provide students with practical, hands-on experience in their chosen field of expertise to complement their coursework. The Internship MUST be approved in advance by the program chair.

WMMN 608
Introduction to Multimedia Technology
- This course is designed to introduce prospective Web and Multimedia students to basic topics and terminology relevant to the tools and applications of the field. The Adobe Creative Cloud applications are used for image creation, editing, and layout. Best practices and issues related to image resolution and file formats are covered.
The course explores the following topics: Introduction to Adobe Bridge, Introduction to Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign.

The Foundation and History of Design I
- The curriculum focuses on visual literacy, the vocabulary of visual forms and the principles and elements of design. Creative problem solving and tecnhnical competence is mastered through class critiques and student presentations. Student projects will reflect cumulative understanding of concepts and skills including:
color, 2D composition, artistic research, Intellectual Property, Copyright and Fair Use.

Foundations of Web Design
- Complete coverage of the key elements in Web Design using basic HTML5 and CS3. Topics covered include creating graphics, typography and interactivity. Planning a website from start to finish integrating text, graphics, navigation and design. Problem solving strategies are emphasized.

The Foundation and History of Design II
- This course builds on the History of Design I curriculum and provides a deeper exploration into the rich and complex global history of design. Complex interrelationships between styles, culture, technology and materials will inform student projects.

Not ready for a Master's Degree?
If you're an undergraduate student or a recent high school graduate, consider our Integrated Technology Merit Fast Track program. It will enable you to earn a bachelor's and a master's degree in less time for less money, allowing you to take up to nine credits worth of graduate level courses in your senior year of your undergraduate design program. The credits earned will count toward both your bachelor's and master's degrees. Applying the same credits to both degree programs shortens the time it will take you to finish school, and it will cut the cost.
Graduating with two degrees will also give you an advantage as you embark on your career path. Merit Fast track students who maintain the merit track requirements are guaranteed acceptance to the Graduate School of Technology.
You can earn both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in the following major:
